Modern Dystopias and Theories of Totalitarianism

The diploma thesis Modern Dystopias and Theories of Totalitarianism deals with comparation of this two phenomena. The thesis is based on the concept of Giovanni Sartori. He understands the phenomenon of totalitarianism as ideal ending of the axis totalitarianism- democracy. Extreme points of this axis fulfill the role of unrealizable ideal regimes. In reality we can only move closer to them but modern dystopias may represent these ideal regimes. The diploma thesis is divided into theoretical and practical section. There is the analyse of five books in the theoretical section which deal with the theory of totalitarianism. The analysis contains the work of Sigmund Neumann, Hannah Arendt, Carl J. Friedrich and Zbigniew K. Brzeziński, Giovanni Sartori and Juan J. Linz. Each theory of totalitarianism is supplemented by reflection from other authors. There is the analyse of five dystopias (J. Zamjatin - We, A. Huxley - Brave New World, G. Orwell - Nineteen Eighty-four, M. Atwood - The Handmaid`s Tale, A. Moore, D. Lloyd - V for Vendetta) in the practical section. The analysis contains the storyline of the book, elements of totalitarian regime in the dystopia and inspiration of author for the world of dystopia. Dystopia genre in contemporary youth literature

The thesis is focused on dystopia genre in contenporary youth literature and its use in literature classes. First chapters are focused on function of youth literature, popular genres in last 10 years, dystopia and utopia genre and comparation of dystopian fiction and dystopian reality. The main topic of this thesis is didactic treatment of the thematic unit on the topic dystopia, which includes 6 teaching hours. The result of this unit is use dystopia genre in primary schools.
The Theme of Manipulation in George Orwell´s Nineteen Eighty-Four and Joseph Heller´s Catch-22

The goal of this diploma thesis is to analyse the motif of manipulation in the most renowned dystopian work of the 20th century, that is in the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four by the British author George Orwell and in the anti-war satirical novel Catch-22 by America's Joseph Heller. The thesis opens with a chapter dealing with the theoretical matters of the work. This part briefly discusses the concepts related to the analysed novels. The next part of the thesis introduces the authors of the novels in question, their life journeys and development leading to the creation of their most famous novels. The final two chapters contain the analyses of the works with Orwell's novel coming in first place, followed by Catch-22. In conclusion, the author compares manipulation in both works. While analysing manipulation in the said works, the author focuses not solely on its societal impact, but also on the ways in which manipulation influences individuals in the universes created by Orwell and Heller.
Y. I. Zamyatin's novel We and its reception in Western literature

This bachelor's thesis describes Zamyatin's novel We and its influence on Western literature. The theoretical part of this thesis further defines the genre of dystopian fiction and examines its main features, introduces the author, his life and the historical and social contexts of this novel. It also delves into the specifics of other literary works that have been strongly inspired by We. The practical part deals with the literary analysis of the novel and compares it to various other influential dystopian fiction works of the 20th century, from both the thematic and linguistic point of view. The goal of this thesis is to show the timelessness of Zamyatin's novel, emphasize his legacy for the future generations and find similarities or differences in the interpretation of totalitarian regimes in Eastern and Western literature. Depiction of Media in British Dystopian Fiction

The thesis aims to give an overview of the treatment of media in texts that have formed modern dystopian writing and to which new additions in the genre necessarily relate. This set of texts consists of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four, Aldous Huxley's Brave New World and When the Sleeper Awakes by H. G. Wells; first chapter substantiates this selection and proceeds to define the concepts of "media" and "dystopia". Second chapter is concerned with the understanding of history in dystopian societies and shows that the very concept of historicity is undesirable for a totalitarian state, which seeks to blur history and reduce it to a three-point schema "before the Event - the Event (revolution) - after the Event". Closer analysis then shows that the Event itself can be divided into a further triad that has to be completed in order to pass into eternal post-Event society. Third chapter describes the use of citizens as media and shows that while Huxley's society uses what Michel Foucault calls "biopower" to achieve this goal, Orwell's society rather uses the concept of "discipline". The Bachelor's work will focus on antiutopian novels Nineteen Eighty-Four by English writer George Orwell and We by Russian writer Yevgeny Zamyatin. At first I will describe the totalitarian society and ideology in general. After that I will move on to short description of genres political novel, utopy and antiutopy. And finally, the two totalitarian societies will be described and compared, which will lead to uncovering of differences and similarities in both novels.

The topic of this diploma thesis is the antiutopia and totalism in the Czech and world cinematography and it elaborates the proposal of an artistic approach to the film Nineteen Eighty-Four based on the novel by George Orwell. The theoretical part of this thesis deals with the definition of the relationship between antiutopia and totalitarianism, their characteristic features and how they manifest themselves in the cinema. This phenomenon is discussed in more detail in the folowing analysis of selected films in terms of their visual and production values. The second part of this thesis looks into the artistic approach to the film. The concept elaborates an urban design as well as individual exterior and interior sets and proposal of their designing.

In my Bachelor thesis I am going to describe literary works of Egon Bondy in Czech underground epoch. I aim to define his works using literary piece called Invalidni sourozenci for this anti-utopian novella from future describes the atmosphere of the Czech underground 70s. I am going to analyze his other prosaic and poetic works, but also this very historical period. A am going to follow the effect of the underground on Bondy and conversely. Abstract (in English) The aim of this bachelor thesis is to analyse Japanese antiutopic animated movie The Sky Crawlers directed by Mamoru Oshii. The work tries to research the ideological structuring of this film's fictional world. The ideological background of the movie is analysed using Louis Pierre Althusser's ideology criticism together with Lubomír Doležel's fictional worlds theory. We combine these (structuralistic) tools to examine the impact of ideology in the movie as a whole. Design of this picture is examined in relation to its antiutopic genre. That is why we put emphasis on the picture's wider (anti)utopic/dystopic context. For a better understanding of the genre we define two antiutopic conditions which serve to make its definition clear.
